Whilst My Olive Roots is a platform dedicated to telling stories that reflect the richness of the culture and heritage of Palestine and diaspora across generations; it’s impossible not to berate the deplorable situation faced today by Palestinian women trapped under illegal Israeli occupation.

A woman with a voice is by definition a strong woman. But the search to find that voice can be remarkably difficult.

Since 1967 when the occupation escalated, 15,000 women have been arrested by the Israeli army for a multitude of ‘crimes’ in their own land. With UNICEF claiming that “every twelve hours a Palestinian child is detained, interrogated and/or detained/prosecuted”, the situation could seem hopeless.

And yet it is not. Global awareness about the entrenched injustice, considered illegal under international law, is beginning to spread worldwide and as we know, awareness is the first step that leads to action and eventually, to transformation.

No matter how much, forces of oppression try to obfuscate the truth and distort the narrative about the plight of Palestine, it’s women are strengthening their voice, marshaling their action and using the power of the Internet to holler their truth.
